One side of each map sheet is a topographic map showing the alignment of the trail and a profile diagram showing the vertical relief of the trail. On the reverse side are specific Trail data and mileages, information about lean-tos and campsites, plus descriptions for road access and side trails. General access map for the area south of the Kennebec River is provided on Map 6; a similar map for most of the area north of the Kennebec is on Map 4. Guide provides general background information regarding the Trail and what to expect, suggestions for hikes of various lengths and difficulty. Also, description of plants and animals found along the Trail and the history and management of the Trail as a whole and in Maine in particular. Chapter 7, Trail Synopsis by Map, includes a comprehensive overview for each section of trail. Includes a "points of interest" section for each map that provides the hiker with more background information about the area being traversed.
